One of the things that makes the Christmas story so winsome is that it involves a lot of ordinary people, people much like us. It doesn’t make sense that God would do it this way. But there we are, and there they were. Mary, Joseph, cousins, shepherds, government officials, innkeepers, even an emperor—all pawns designed to be used by God to star in this very story. It’s a good reminder that God is always at work, and that God’s plans will be worked out through us or in spite of us—because God’s plan never fails.
