In our contemporary culture, the dance between husbands and wives and “who’s in charge?” creates a minefield of tension and controversy. Paul doesn’t have any trouble with it at all. He tells us right off that as Christian husbands and wives, the only answer to “who’s in charge?” is clear: it’s Jesus! And then, based on our understanding and acceptance of a required mutual submission to Christ, God has ordained authority structures in society, including in marriage, with no intent or desire of subjugating anyone. In fact, the opposite is true! As believers who seek to be submitted to Christ, we will be able to see that His structures for marriage, the family, and our work lives—are all given to bless us, and make possible relationships with mutual honor, respect, protection, support. And once again, it depends on us being a certain kind of people, with the right hearts and motives.
